eflows4HPC partners participated actively with a poster and two scientific presentations during the EGU General Assembly 2023 that took place 23-28 April 2023 in Vienna, Austria.
Firstly, on Monday 24 April, Donatello Elia from CMCC presented an eflows4HPC poster titled “Convergence of HPC, Big Data and Machine Learning for Earth System workflows”.
On Wednesday morning 26 April the BSC expert Marisol Monterrubio-Velasco gave the presentation titled “UCIS4EQ applied to the South Iceland region”. She presented the UCIS4EQ (Urgent Computing Integrated Services for Earthquakes) workflow applied to the use case of the Southwest Iceland, one of the areas where the largest earthquakes occur in this country. She finished her presentation by presenting the encouraging results, that complement GMPEs for rapid hazard assessment. “UCIS4EQ applied to the Souher Iceland region allowed us to test the workflow capability to give a valuable and fast answer on the impact of an Earthquake after it occurs in an urgent context. The current level of UCIS4EQ is reaching a high maturity thanks to the eFlows4HPC software stack and the improvements carried out in this project”, says Marisol Monterrubio-Velasco eflows4HPC researcher involved in pillar 3. She also emphasized the need to introduce machine learning capabilities for fast simulation-based predictions at lower frequencies.
On Thursday 27 April morning the researcher Louise Cordrie from INGV presented the talk titled “Using available and incoming data for reducing and updating seismic source ensembles for probabilistic tsunami forecasting (PTF) in early-warning and urgent computing”. This female researcher presented an eflows4HPC workflow under development for tsunamis hazard urgent computing as well as the 4 steps to be followed by end-users.
